Laser hair removal: how to prepare and aftercare tips

The results you get depend on the sessions β€” and on the prep and care around them. A practical checklist.

The 4-week rule

Stop waxing, plucking, and using hair removal creams at least 4 weeks before your session. The laser needs the hair root in place to disable the follicle. Shaving is always fine β€” in fact, it is required the day before your appointment.

The day before and the day of

Shave the area 24 hours before so the surface is smooth, and skip lotions, creams, and deodorant on the treatment area on the day. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not press on the treated skin.

Immediately after

Mild redness and swelling are normal and fade within a few hours. Cool compresses can help if the skin feels warm. Avoid hot showers, saunas, pools, and workouts that cause heavy sweating for the first 24 to 48 hours.

For the following weeks

Protect the treated area from the sun and use sunscreen if it will be exposed. Do not wax or pluck between sessions β€” shave instead. Exfoliating gently after a few days helps prevent ingrown hairs as treated hairs fall out.
